Both freetype and xtt deal with ttf fonts, so it's perfectly reasonable to expect only one to work at a time. You can choose which based on your preferences, but running both makes no more sense than, say running xfstt and xfs-xtt to serve the same set of fonts. You shouldn't need an external font server. I'm attaching my configuration file, if it's any help. It works either way, with freetype or xtt. It was generated by dexter, but I've had success with the config files generated by dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 on other machines as well.
