I found it helpful to work through the DNS HOW-TO, following the
examples on my own machine. It shows you how to set up a mock
domain using BIND, and the explanations are pretty clear. I
think it's worth doing just to see how it works, and to convince
yourself that you could set up a rudimentary domain if you had
to, even if you don't plan on actually running a name server. I
like how-to's; full documentation is often a bit overwhelming if
you're not already up to speed.
