Unfortunately, there isn't a really good Free video format yet. Ogg Theora is probably the closest, but it won't even go alpha until sometime this year. mplayer (there's an apt source available at http://marillat.free.fr/, it won't be entering Debian main any time soon) can play most everything you throw at it, especially with the 'quicktime' and 'w32codecs' packages Christian has made (also at the site above).
