I had the same problem : I upgraded sawfish in woody and it disappeared. but I have now another problem : gmc is not working anymore but I use a terminal and mc, that's better. In fact, this happened when I removed the standard opened windows : gmc and gnome-help. Delete your ~/.gnome/session with a terminal and login again with gdm with a sawfish session.
