I've now amended the relevant file as suggested (with 0.16.172.arpa. in the place of the original 172.16.0.in-addr.arpa.) and all is working well. Many thanks to those who helped me sort this out. Now I'm astounded that versions of bind preceding 8.2.3 were able to make any sense of my configuration at all...
