Hi folks, sorry for being off topic, but I wouldn't know whereelse to ask ...
I think I'v managed to break my CD-ROM drive. It get's recognized correctly by the BIOS and during kernel boot, but when I try to `mount` a data CD, mount reports "No medium found". When I try `cdplay` on an audio CD, it says: # cdplay cdplay: can't open cdrom (/dev/cdrom) cdplay: CD status is no_disc # I get the following message in the kernel logs: hdb: MATSHITA CR-583, ATAPI CDROM drive <-- drive get's recognized ... hdb: ATAPI 8X CD-ROM drive, 128kB Cache Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.09 cdrom: open failed. <-- oops VFS: Disk change detected on device ide0(3,64) cdrom: open failed. And so on ... So, I figure that there is something wrong with the laser or some mechanics, since the drive get's recognized correctly. Any idea, what I can do about it, apart from putting it into the trash? Oh yeah, the above commands work as aspected when I put in another drive (Mitsumi FX400), so it's not something onboard.
