I had exactly the same problem. I'm convinced it has nothing to do with fetchmail, as I could reproduce the bug by telneting into the POP server and typing the same simple commands. It's a MS Exchange problem. I found two entries about it the MS knowledge base (Q168245 and Q237961). One said it was a known problem (great) and the other said it was solved in service pack 3. My lab's NT admin must have upgraded Exchange because _that_ problem went away (other remains!).
