fsck -n /dev/hda4 which will flood the screen with errors saying `no' to all fix questions. no changes will be made to the filesystem at all. this way you can get an idea of how totally hosed the filesystem is. the opposite is fsck -y which will answer yes to all fix questions and `fix' everything that is wrong.
