PDF's made with proprietary Adobe software get amazingly small file sizes through the use of the encumbered LZW compression algorithm as well as a lot of prorietary font wizardry. while usefull in some circumstances the GNU pdf utilities won't get you a comparable result to the proprietary Acrobat ones (both in look or in file size). Adobe do sell an Acrobat Distiller Server for linux which would do all this (once u have a postscript file) but you might well have financial or ideological reasons for not wanting to do this.
