what are you trying to do? start the gnome enviornment? the gnome 
enviornment is many programs, and usually is loaded with the command
'gnome-session'. i do not beleive you can load this at the console
and expect it to fire up X for you, configure X to use it by one
of several ways, heres one:

echo "exec `which gnome-session`" >~/.xinitrc

then 'startx'

(i prefer afterstep .. :) )
