Thank you for the replies, but it was none of the mentioned :-|

I guess i have to include more information:

I started the followoing three apps (to have some apps running using the
internet):

 ftp ftp.debian.org
 telnet pluto.tu-graz.ac.at
 ssh -v ftp.tu-graz.ac.at

Output by ssh (I started it the verbose mode, I thought i will see more
but ...):
SH_2.3.0p1, protocol versions 1.5/2.0.
Compiled with SSL (0x0090600f).
debug: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh/ssh_config

debug: Connecting to ftp.tu-graz.ac.at [129.27.3.12] port 22.
debug: Allocated local port 1022.
debug: Connection established.
(after that nothing else will ever appear)

now the output of netstat -e (only tcp-connections):

This what I get out of netstat.
hiaslboy:~# insmod ipchains
Using /lib/modules/2.4.0/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/ipchains.o
hiaslboy:~# ipchains -L
Chain input (policy ACCEPT):
Chain forward (policy ACCEPT):
Chain output (policy ACCEPT):

Could I have done anything wrong with the kernel? (Linux-2.4 patched
with reiserfs)
I can't get enything working except ping and ICQ (I guess ICQ uses
somehow ping-protokoll)

Thank you, and please give me any hint how I can find more out.

Right now I have no clue.
Thank you, mattHias Wieser
PS.: The system has never run successful, thus I can't say if it is
kernel with something wrongly configured or not (it is the first instll)
(now i am running SuSE)
