I really like this feature of the list. I used to wonder myself, but I heave learned the usefulness of it. Another list I am on has the list as the Reply-To. If I select "group-reply" then the list gets 2 copies, a To and Cc. Now I'm using mutt and I use its list feature so only the list gets a message sent to it and I don't get extra copies. Sometimes, however, people ask a question, but aren't on the list. In that case they need the extra cc. -D
