It turns out that the symlink for my Java interpreter was pointing to Kaffe, which apparently doesn't handle JServ correctly. I changed the interpreter path to my symlink to the Blackdown 1.2.2 JDK interpreter, added a few .jars (there doesn't seem to be a fesi .deb, yet) and all was well.
