High,

you can switch to different resolutions with ctr+alt+num+ and num-. For
using only one resolution check the /etc/X11/XF86Config and check the
lines which describes which resolutions you want to use.

ps: when something goes wrong, like sync-errors, you can kill the X server
by ctr+alt+backspace.
