I did an apt-get upgrade on my woody box. The last time was about 3 months ago. Now it no longer gives me a gdm login screen. It just stays in a command line console. When I do startx I get: "cannot stat /etc/X11/X (No such file or directory), aborting...Can't connect: errno=111, giving up". It looks like woody now uses release 4 of Xfree86. Is there a new configuration tool? XF86Config no longer works to configure X. The Debian site for the package says to read /usr/share/doc/xfree86-common but that file does not exist either.
