To re-iterate, bookmarker *was* working; I can only assume that the apt-get dist-upgrade I did Nov 14 (which installed new php3 and php3-mysql .debs) broke something. Actually, I just fell back to the prior .debs (from my /var/cache/apt/archives/), and the problem goes away.
