something like this *might* be possible with tcfs [0] or something like that but i doubt it would work over ftp. shared accounts really are not a good idea, there is no accountability or responsibility for what its used for. and it created problems like what you have. the correct solution is to create an individual account for all the users and use groups to share access. then what you want is easy: chmod 700 dir.
