it depends, the partition must start within the 1024 cylindar limit,
but is not REQUIRED to end within it, the problem is if it does not
end within the first 1024 cyl your kernel might end up beyond that
limit by pure chance.  

lilo from potato does support booting past the 1024th cylindar on
capable hardware.  upgrading to potato is a very good idea anyway.
