Installing into the same partition is not a simple thing to do. (Need special script to rearrange directory structure and possibly several initrd images I think. This is more complicated than making a distribution. Why bother.)
Everyone usually install each distro to a partition and mount other partitions containing other distros installed on somewhere /mnt or /home. This way, data or configuration are readable. (As Jaye did) I can think of some optimization of disk usage. If /tmp is separate partition and /usr/tmp -> /tmp, this can be shared by all distro. /boot partition content can be rearranged so that all linux share single boot partition provided lilo.conf is re-written manually. Key is use different / partition for each distro. But the way Jaye did is much more strait forward and simple. Good luck hacking.
