could be a few things.
1. is this a normal ATAPI cdrom or a scsi?
2. check out
ls -l /dev/cdrom
and make sure it points to something sensible (i'm assuming you know how
hard drives are named: hda, hdb, etc).
3. just out of curiosity, look at the output of
grep /etc/fstab | grep cdrom
just some ideas...
