More data / possible solution on this problem. I've noticed from time to time that launching Netscape from an icon or application fails, and launching from the command line produces the output:
no recognized font charsets!
The problem is resolved if the following resource is commented in
~/.netscape/preferences:
# FONT_CHARSET: iso-8859-1
...I'm not sure why this causes a problem, but it does.
