One thing that hasn't been mentioned yet, these are packages containing binaries, not source. If you want to download the source, 'apt-get source packagename' (assuming you have your deb-src lines properly set up) will download the original source tarball, debian diffs, and a checksum file; unpack the tarball into a subdirectory of the current directory; and apply the patch. -- finger for GPG public key.
