emacs cursor color

What's the proper way to set the cursor color in emacs. I'm using the
following in my .Xresources file
emacs*background:DarkSlateGrey
emacs*foreground:Wheat
and the following in my .emacs file: (set-cursor-color "red"). It
works but not well.
