Solved.
Damn I'm dumb.
More data: I remembered that I'd changed apt-get methods from whatever
Slink uses by default (ftp?) to http. Grabbing the lynx .deb (I *can*
ftp out), I've confirmed I cannot connect to remote sites with lynx.
Changing the /etc/apt/sources.list resource type to "ftp" from "http"
allows me to run an "apt-get update".
So I run 'strace' on both lynx and apt-get but don't know if this is
telling me something or not -- anything I should be looking for?
Hmmm...:
write(1, "\rLooking up localhost:5865\33[m\17\33["..., 43^MLooking up
localhost:5865ESC[m^OESC[37mESC[40mESC[K) = 43
Gee, that port looks familiar. Funny, I don't remember installing
Junkbuster on this box....oooooooh....
Word to the wise: when promulgating .bashrc files among machines,
delete the environment stuff specific to a given box.
I'd left the 'http_proxy' environment variable which *is* appropriate
for my workstation, but not the mailing list server.
Sorry for the interruption.
