I have 64MB RAM, 300MB swap and it has worked flawlessly with kernelversions from 2.2.1, and untill 2.2.17pre6, across SuSE, a little RedHat and now Debian. I had the problem with the standard kernel from Debian as well, so I think it is a specific bug somewhere in 2.2.17pre6. I think I will try to use André Dahlqvist's suggestion above in this thread, and upgrade the kernel. > > Ron Rademaker > Thanks for your time, also to you André! Regards Morten PS: Is it possible to log the memory usage in some way? It needs to be something that writes a log to disk, because when I get the do_try_to_free_pages messages X freezes, and I can't use f.ex. xosview or gtop. Maybe ``atsar'', I'll have a look at freshmeat, but other suggestions will be appreciated! > On Mon, 21 Aug 2000, Morten Liebach wrote: > > > Hello Debians. > > > > I seem to have some Kernel VM problems, but I'm not sure why. > > > > Sometimes I see my machine nearly freezing, and then becoming good > > after a minute or two. > > In the logs I get up to several hundred lines like these: > > > > Aug 20 18:22:13 pc89225 kernel: VM: do_try_to_free_pages failed for gpm... > > Aug 20 18:22:16 pc89225 kernel: VM: do_try_to_free_pages failed for gpm... > > Aug 20 18:22:18 pc89225 kernel: VM: do_try_to_free_pages failed for gpm... > > Aug 20 18:22:18 pc89225 kernel: VM: do_try_to_free_pages failed for > > ssh-agent... > > Aug 20 18:22:23 pc89225 kernel: VM: do_try_to_free_pages failed for > > syslog-ng... > > Aug 20 18:22:55 pc89225 kernel: VM: do_try_to_free_pages failed for > > syslog-ng... > > Aug 20 18:22:57 pc89225 kernel: VM: do_try_to_free_pages failed for gpm... > > Aug 20 18:22:57 pc89225 kernel: VM: do_try_to_free_pages failed for > > kswapd... > > Aug 20 18:22:57 pc89225 kernel: VM: do_try_to_free_pages failed for init... > > Aug 20 18:22:57 pc89225 kernel: VM: do_try_to_free_pages failed for > > syslog-ng... > > > > etc., etc. ... > > > > (it usually repeats the same message more often than this example). > > > > I do see ``kernel: VM: do_try_to_free_pages failed for <something>...'' > > in the logs from time to time, but they are most often only one or two > > at a time, and they aren't felt at all. > > > > My kernel is a selfcompiled (with make-kpkg) 2.2.17pre6 kernel from the > > kernel-source deb, no extra patches. > > > > I usually happens when I fetch mail with fetchmail, invoking exim, > > procmail and lbdb in the process, but it seems to be all running > > programs that's affected by it. > > > > It's annoying, though it only happens once or twice per week, I'd like > > if there were some kind of fix. > > > > I hope someone more knowledgeable than me knows what's going on, it > > might be a suptle misconfiguration in my kernelconfig ... > > > > Kind regards > > Morten > > > > -- > > UNIX, reach out and grep someone! > > > > > > -- > > Unsubscribe? mail -s unsubscribe [EMAIL PROTECTED] < /dev/null > > > > > -- > Unsubscribe? mail -s unsubscribe [EMAIL PROTECTED] < /dev/null > > > -- UNIX, reach out and grep someone!
