No, USB isn't really supported under 2.2.x, or earlier, kernels. At
least not in the kernels as they're distributed via kernel.org.

You'll have to get the kernel source for 2.2.16 and obtain the
backport (from the 2.3.x kernels) of the USB code to 2.2.16.

On the bright side, having done the above, I haven't had any trouble
with my USB modem. Of course there are problems with kernel 2.2.16 but
until 2.2.17 is fully released, or you run one of the development
kernels, that's your only option for USB support in 2.2.x.
