Well, in the meantime I restarted the X server -- needed to do some
real work[tm]!  I send nonetheless the info -- if you can spot
something wrong...

$ ls -l /tmp/.X11-unix/
total 0
srwxrwxrwx    1 root     root            0 Aug 16 14:47 X0=

$ xhost 
access control enabled, only authorized clients can connect

$ xauth list
