You might try this again with the wave *before* it was converted to an mp3. The mp3 format simplifies the file a little bit for its own compression; this is lossy compression so the simplification sticks around even after the file is converted back to a wav. I don't know for sure, but I think it's likely that the un-mp3'd wav file will not compress nearly so well.
