A year or more ago, I had a username of 9 characters. Everything
worked fine except at. IIRC, I found something in its source code
that assumed a username length <= 8 characters. So the moral is that
long usernames are OK, but there are probably still some programs that
make poor assumptions. Expect trouble, and you will not be
disappointed.
