as i mentioned this problem occurs even when gpm is NOT running, it
even occurs in gpm itself (without X) 

in reply to a previous post i tried using MouseManPlusPS/2 which only
altered the behavior, now instead of the pointer ending up in the
upper right corner it ends up in the lower left corner.

i have checked for irq conflicts and do not see anything (though the
BIOS is not terribly helpful in looking for such things since it seems
to do everything automatically)

i am not using Xfree4, i am using the debian Xfree 3.3.6 packages
(3.3.6-10)
