What is /dev/log ?

  would anyone know where the file /dev/log comes from? 

>> ls -l /dev/log
srw-rw-rw-    1 root     root            0 Jul 18 07:46 /dev/log

  "RTFM" is an acceptable answer, especially if the man page is
specified.
