How many console lines do you have? Are you running SVGATextMode (note
the casing of that)? Check the contents of /etc/TextConfig,
particularly of the the section around
Option "LoadFont"
...which describes console fonts.
You may try running /usr/bin/setfont with various fonts under
/usr/share/consolefonts. I find best results with the lat1u-16 series
myself.
