Thanks Martijn, and others for your replies. I don't think the files are encrypted. Everybody I talk to says ghostscript has trouble with newer .pdf. When I had encrypted .pdf files a couple of years ago, ghostscript complained that I needed a decrypting package, and when I got it, ghostview read the encrypted (older) .pdf files just fine.
I will, however follow you advice and get hte gs-pdfencryp package off my Potato cd and see if that fixes my problem.
