Without knowing how much memory your machine has, I would say you certainly need more than the standard amount supplied in a 486. Mine had 64 Mb in it, but had 32 at one stage which was okay. More is definitely better when it come to memory.
Don't throw your 486 away when you eventually get a faster machine.
