Well, the only packages you really need are thos needed to compile the kernel, you'll probably have them installed already (gcc, cpp, make, etc.). If you want to use make menuconfig, and that's what you want ;), you'll also need ncurses installed.
You shouldn't run into any problems, but you never know....
