Hmm, I just did apt-get install gedit (version 0.5.4-1) and it works fine on my machine. Only thing I would suggest is perhaps purge any trace of gedit that you currently have, and install it again. The problem might be more critical than this (ie. might be more GTk related than gEdit related) but its something to try, since its only a 150k package.
