When you connect the laptop to the desktop, how are you doing the
connection?  If you are using CAT-5 cable, then you need to either:
1) Use a hub between the machines
or
2) Use a crossover cable

When using CAT-5 you can't use a "regular" cable to directly
connect the two machines.  It's my gues that you're trying
to do a direct connect with a "regular" cable.
