For a beginner in the firewall world, I'd recommend PMFirewall. It'll set you up quickly and painlessly, if you don't have the time to learn the ipchains syntax. I was in a situation where I had to implement before I had the knowledge. This gave me the breathing space to learn. Sometimes we learn best by taking things apart. It worked for me. Their scripts are easily understood.
