Hi! After having now successfully compiled my new 2.0.38 kernel with all the necessary modules I tried insmoding via-rhine, which I hope is the correct module for (out of /proc/pci):
Bus 0, device 9, function 0: Ethernet controller: VIA Technologies Unknown device (rev 6). Vendor id=1106. Device id=3043. Medium devsel. IRQ 7. Master Capable. Latency=64. Min Gnt=118.Max Lat=152. I/O at 0xe000. Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xfa000000. ifconfig -a shows the eth2-interface: eth2 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:80:C8:E4:83:E9 inet addr:0.0.0.0 Bcast:0.0.0.0 Mask:0.0.0.0 BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 Interrupt:7 Base address:0xe000 and the syslog looks ok Mar 27 21:14:15 WatchZwerg kernel: via-rhine.c:v1.00 9/5/98 Written by Donald Becker Mar 27 21:14:15 WatchZwerg kernel: http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/v ia-rhine.html Mar 27 21:14:15 WatchZwerg kernel: Found VIA VT3043 Rhine at PCI address 0xe001, IRQ 7.
