yeah ... i can do that, but it's not quite what i had in mind. i did however just check the gedit homepage and it turns out that the debian package is quite out of date and that there are a lot of bugs fixed between the debian version and the current version ... so i'm compiling and hopefully if it's stable it will provide what i need. thanks all. adam.
