enter the root password, then at the prompt type:

e2fsck /dev/XXXX

where XXX is the name of the device that has the root filesystem.

you may wanna run a e2fsck -c /dev/XXXX as well to check for bad blocks.

if its an IBm or maxtor i would get the drive diagnostics software off
their site as the errors it shows look to be rather serious. were you
playing with hdparm ?  you can damage your drive if you don't know what
your doing(i've never gone near hdparm)
