Are you using gpm (mouse support for virtual consoles)? If so, switch to a terminal-window using Ctrl-Alt-F1, login and for now do "/etc/inid.d/gpm stop". There are options to make gpm support X or vice-versa, but I haven't got them in my head. Restart X.
