Enable "Networking support" and "TCP/IP networking" in the kernel. That's it for the 2.2 kernel series, IIRC. For the 2.0 series you need to setup a loopback network device. My setup has a init script </etc/init.d/network> which does this. Dpkg does not know what package it belongs to. I think it belonged to netbase from slink. A recipe on making you own: # cat << 'EOF' > /etc/init.d/network #!/bin/sh ifconfig lo 127.0.0.1 route add -net 127.0.0.0 EOF # chmod +x /etc/init.d/network # (cd /etc/rcS.d; ln -s ../init.d/network S40network) That should be it.
