X app keymapping problem

I switched (2 weeks or so) from a RH6.1 distibution to potato via
untarring a base-dist over the RH, booting, using apt to get all the
packages.
After setting up X again, I had problems with keymappings, my delete key
would come out as "SETTING", and my backspace seemed to work like a space
key.
I corrected it with xmodmap/xkeycaps, and things are fine...however, this
is a stopgap measure and I wonder what I might have configured wrong ? I
have a MS Natural keyboard.
