Mutt has very sophsticated handling of attachments. You can receive them, view them if text, play them if soundclips and save others if unknown type. Press the 'v' key when viewing a mail with attachments. It can probably do a lot more besides, I'm just a user. You don't need to mess about with mpack since you can attach files with the 'a' key prior to sending the message. This will automatically generate all that "Multipart-Encoding" stuff.
