probably needs a kernel w/ scsi built into the kernel
or initrd .. which in turns load the scsi driver

you need to fix lilo.conf or equiv
        boot=/dev/md0
        root=/dev/md0
        
        .... NOT /dev/sda1  ... /dev/sdb1...
        ( and it has to be "raid autodetect"
