yes it is.
i think there is an other error: (a little bit far-fetched, but that
is exactly what happened to me...and as he seems not to know what
/var/spool/mail/username is - the mailboxpath is shown in standart-mutt -
he probably uses a filter)

he uses procmail (or some other filters) and these filters define
a new standart-location...like DEFAULT=file in procmail. so no file
will ever be stored in /var/spool/mail/username. but mutt assumes
this file to exist.
have a look for mbox/index/inbox/mail in your home-directory. then
use mutt -f filename.
