he uses procmail (or some other filters) and these filters define a new standart-location...like DEFAULT=file in procmail. so no file will ever be stored in /var/spool/mail/username. but mutt assumes this file to exist. have a look for mbox/index/inbox/mail in your home-directory. then use mutt -f filename. > The file /var/spool/mail/<user> holds incoming mail messages, > in some standard Unix mail format.
