I thought "file" used magic; it says:

file /usr/bin/\[ 
/usr/bin/[: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1,
             dynamically linked (uses shared libs), stripped

but I assume that the shell never bothers to run /usr/bin/[
(or /bin/echo etc.).
