Maybe you need to add your dictionary to ispell-dictionary-alist (not sure what the right way to do this is, though) It should also help to set the variable debug-on-error to something non-nil to get a backtrace: M-x set-variable RET debug-on-error RET t Another way might be to set your dictionary to "default" with /usr/sbin/update-ispell-dictionary.
