Getting cvs to work over a network is pretty easy to do and is explained
pretty well in the documentation. In the "info" manual for cvs it is under
the "Repository" -- "Remote Repositories" hypertext links. You really
should read this as there are some options as to how you connect to the
remote machine that might be different for your particular situation. 

I don't know about the cvs version issue, but I do the remote cvs thing
with a Linux box as the client and a Solaris box as the server all the
time.
